🇬🇧 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 27810 — The Castle of Avesnes: Ghost of a Fortress

There was a time when Avesnes-le-Comte did not surrender to just anyone. Dominating the town with its imposing mass, the fortified castle was the beating heart of seigneurial power—a stone giant whose shadow still traces the contours of our collective memory today.

This fortress, which lived a thousand lives through successive demolitions and reconstructions, covered an impressive area of two hectares. Surrounded by wide and deep moats, it commanded respect and fear. However, the fate of this colossus was sealed in 1774, the year of its sale and final dismantling. Of this past splendor, only the brave remains of a tower still stood until 1959.

Historical evocation of the Fortified Castle of Avesnes 📍 Evocation of the fortress: a two-hectare colossus now vanished.

The Era of Paladins

It was the glorious time of paladins and chivalry, an era when the French court displayed its greatest magnificence. One hardly knows what commanded more admiration: the elegance of the ladies or the proud, martial bearing of the knights appearing in their shimmering armor on iron-clad steeds.

Within these walls, high gallantry was not an empty word. Young lords dreamed only of great deeds of valor, while young women were fascinated by the prestige of victory and triumph.
