The Nameless Bell

A survivor from 1793. Between sacred bronze and Republican ideals.

The « Corpus Delicti »

It weighs 1,600 kg and rings in G (Sol). This bell is not just a musical instrument; it is a survivor. Cast using the metal from ancient bells shattered during the Reign of Terror, it carries within it the violent history of the French Revolution in the Pas-de-Calais.

In 1793, the law of July 23rd ordered that only one bell should remain per parish. The others were to be sent to the foundry to forge cannons for the Republic. During this time, the church of Avesnes was transformed into a saltpeter factory to support the war effort.

Saved by the Commune

History could have ended there, but local officials decided to intercept the metal before it left for Saint-Pol. Their argument was as bold as it was pragmatic: the town needed a « civilian » bell to rhythm the life of the city. It was a true act of heritage resistance under the guise of Republican necessity.

Rebirth at the « Escalus »

The bell was cast on-site, in what is now Marie Curie Street, formerly known as the Escalus enclosure. The account of its solemn transport to the bell tower remains etched in memory: during the procession, the fervor was so high that instead of religious hymns (which were banned), the crowds sang the thunderous « Ça Ira ».

This hybrid bronze, born from the clash of old bells and the fire of the Revolution, remains today one of the most precious witnesses to the tenacity of the people of Avesnes in preserving their identity.
